Stabilizing populations and extending their ranges
Preliminary investigation and survey on occurence and dispersal of the natterjack toad (Bufo calamita), the common spadefoot (Pelobates fuscus), the smooth snake (Coronella austriaca) and the sand lizard (Lacerta agilis)
On the basis of historic reports on the occurrence of these four focus species in different areas in Lower Saxony investigations and surveys will take place to provide a bigger picture of the situation of the populations and eventual changes in their ranges as well as the current status of conservation for many sites. Only current, systematic standardized data can provide a sound basis for targeted measures.
These surveys will be concentrated in particular to the northwestern part of Lower Saxony, namely the rural districts of Emsland, Cloppenburg, Oldenburg, Leer, Ammerland, Wesermarsch, Aurich, Wittmund, Cuxhaven and Friesland as this partly presents the northwestern range of some of the species. The following tasks shall be considered:
- Current presence of the natterjack toad, the common spadefoot, the smooth snake and the sand lizard:
The presence of the species mentioned above will be surveyed and extrapolated on selected sites which are representative and suitable as habitat or had been confirmed occurrence in the past. This includes survey and evaluation of available structures or other relevant parameters.
- Verification of reproduction (counting and/or extrapolating spawn or/and juveniles):
Stages of reproduction (amphibians) or juvenile specimens (reptiles) will be surveyed with standardized methods on reproduction sites to record the current local population to a most precise degree.
- Analysis and Report:
For every site recorded, a report will be prepared, containing a meaningful photo documentation as well as GIS-shape. To provide optional synergies, species and observations made concomitantly will also be presented.
