Hydrogeological investigations
Peatland "Bissingheimer Wäldchen" in Duisburg (NSG DU-010) and "Holzenbergs Bruch" in the nature reserve "Wambachtal und Oembergmoor" in Mülheim an der Ruhr (NSG MH-004)

The two nature reserves „Bissingheimer Wäldchen“ and „Wambachtal und Oembergmoor“ are located in Duisburg and Mülheim an der Ruhr respectively. Both areas are of big importance as habitat for endangerered plant and animal species, e.g. royal fern (Osmunda regalis), green and middle-spotted woodpecker (Picus viridis and Dendrocopos medius), and the European pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca). Furthermore, the areas are of major importance for the biotope coherence, particularly in the densely populated Ruhr area. The sites are characterized by progressive desiccation diminishing the ecological value and allowing the succession of native species. For the successful and sustainable implementation of actions to improve the overall value of the areas and the state of conservation for habitat type 91D0 in particular, the pre-assessment of the existing conditions is essential. To elaborate specific actions for regeneration, an investigation regarding the pedological, geological and hydrological conditions of the areas needs to be prepared, considering the following tasks:
- Groundwater and discharge measurements of high spatial and temporal resolution will be carried out allowing the calculation of a water balance model for the entire area.
- Pedological and geological investigations will be conducted with a special focus on peat decomposition rates.
- A levelling will be carried out to elaborate a digital elevation model including all relevant in- and outflows of the area.
