Annual service meeting of NRW's Ministry for the Environment for Natura 2000 Day!
May 21st is Natura 2000 Day! 30 years ago, the European Union adopted the Habitats Directive. This was the birth of the world's largest coordinated network of protected areas and the LIFE programme to promote them.
For the annual meeting of the Ministry of the Environment, Agriculture, Nature Conservation and Consumer Protection of North Rhine-Westphalia (MULNV) with the higher nature conservation authorities, the North Rhine-Westphalian State Agency for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection (LANUV) and the North Rhine-Westphalian State Forestry and Timber Agency (Landesbetrieb Wald und Holz NRW), the department heads met at the Münster district government on 19th and 20th May 2022.
In addition to current technical topics, the current status of the LIFE IP Atlantic Region DE was presented by project leader Dr Sebastian Schmidt. The excursion took the participants to the nature reserve 'Bockholter Berge' near Greven-Gimbte, where one of the last juniper heaths along the Ems is located. Here, extensive measures to restore unwooded dunes with open sandy areas were carried out last year in cooperation with 'Landesbetrieb Wald und Holz NRW,' 'NABU-Naturschutzstation Münsterland' and the district of Steinfurt. The participants were able to see for themselves the positive developments on the site.
