Network meeting with the "Belgian Nature Integrated Project" (BNIP)
Last week, the LIFE IP Atlantic Region DE met for the first time the “Belgian Nature Integrated Project” (BNIP) in the Ministry for Environment, Agriculture, Conservation and Consumer Protection of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (MULNV) for an exchange of information and experiences.
The goal of the Belgian project is to develop and implement an operational framework for Natura 2000 in the Flemish and Walloon regions as well as in the federal government. The LIFE IP shall establish the required programme structures and management processes. Action plans for both the habitat types and species and specific management plans for the Natura 2000 sites shall be elaborated and necessary tools such as databases, a geographic information system and a data management system shall be developed. Capacity building for target audiences within and outside the administrative agencies is another important component. Various means of communication are to be used to involve all stakeholders.
The Agency for Nature and Forests of the Flemish Ministry of Environment is the beneficiary of the project. Associated beneficiaries are the Department for Nature and Forests of the Public Service Wallonia and the Department for Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment of the Federal Public Service, the nature organisations ‘Natuurpunt’ and ‘Natagora’ as well as ‘Inverde’ (a service provider for the government and the green sector) and the association ‘Natagriwal’ (providing consultancy for farmers, forest and property owners in regard to the implementation of agri-environmental measures and the Natura 2000 network).
In the framework of the network meeting the two LIFE IPs presented each other, explaining the specific regional and federal structures and measures for the implementation of Natura 2000. Experiences made within the LIFE IP Programme were exchanged as well as ideas for future potential collaboration.
