First release of the Common Spadefoot in the area "Rieselfelder Windel", Bielefed

The Common Spadefoot (Pelobates fuscus) is classified as critically endangered in North Rhine-Westphalia. In Bielefeld, only a few isolated populations of this species are known, one of them living in the "Rieselfelder Windel". However, since several years there has not been any sighting of individuals, and due to the extent of the site and the secret living of the species its current status is in question. Therefore, the presumably instable population of the common spadefoot shall be restored via optimization of habitat.

A slightly wet depression in this area has been largely cut clear from shrub last year and a pond was built. In the western and northern parts of the pond dune-like structures were formed to create suitable habitat for the common spadefoot.

At the end of March, the adult breeding animals in the breeding station in Enniger (District of Warendorf) had already spawned. On 6th May, it was time to release the resulting tadpoles: The first 2,000 tadpoles were released within the scope of action C20 in suitable habitat within the Rieselfelder Windel.
