Launch event for the LIFE IP „Atlantic sand landscapes“ in Ibbenbüren
With a launch event on 20th April 2017 for all cooperating institutions and organisations of the LIFE IP as well as interested experts, the official kick-off was given in Ibbenbüren. The meeting offered the opportunity for mutual exchange to all stakeholders and at the same time informed the public for the first time about the Project’s objectives and the planned conservation measures in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony.
Moderator Norbert Blumenroth, Director of the Environment and Nature Academy NRW (NUA), led the approximately 100 guests through the programme. First, the environment ministers of both federal states explained the importance of the LIFE Project for the preservation of biodiversity and the need for transregional cooperation in their speeches. The President of the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), Prof. Beate Jessel, illustrated in her presentation how LIFE Projects serve as a tool to improve the Natura 2000 network and stressed the nationwide importance of the Integrated LIFE Project with its exemplary approach for implementing the PAF in Germany.
The Project Managers from North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony, Dr Sebastian Schmidt and Dr Hans-Georg Wagner, finally presented the detailed objectives of the Project and the implementation of the first Integrated Project in Germany within the LIFE priority area “Nature and Biodiversity”. The event was made perfect with an excursion into the nearby Natura 2000 site “Heiliges Meer – Heupen” to explain the objectives of the Project on site.
